Most revisions of the PlayStation addressed known hardware issues or aimed to lower manufacturing costs and time. External changes were minor, for example, the removal of external I/O ports, until the introduction of the miniaturised "PS one" console revision. The final digit in the model number represents the region code of the console. Model numbers ending in '0' (e.g. SCPH-xxx0) were released in Japan (NTSC-J). Models ending in '1' denote North America (NTSC-U/C). Models ending in '2' signify PAL regions including Europe and Australia. Finally, '3' indicates Asia outside of Japan.

Redesigned small case (38x193x144mm vs 45x260x185mm for the original), light grey. Controller/memory-card ports integrated onto the main PCB; serial and parallel ports removed; external 7.5V DC power adapter replaces the internal PSU; separate reset button removed (double-press power/reset instead). A later PM-41(2) board revision (same SCPH-10x numbering) moved external RAM on-chip for a final cost reduction.
