At launch, the PlayStation 3 was available with either a 20 or 60 GB hard disk drive in the US and Japan, respectively- priced from US$499 to US$599; and with either a 40, 60, or 80 GB hard disk drive in Europe, priced from £299 to £425. Since then, Sony has released two further redesigned models, the "Slim" and "Super Slim" models. As of March 2017, the total number of consoles sold is estimated at 87.4 million.

Announced 2012-09-19. Sliding disc-cover lid (vs the slot-loading drive on earlier models); ~25% smaller and ~20% lighter than the original Slim. The 12 GB flash-memory model replaces the 250 GB HDD SKU in PAL territories; a standalone 250 GB upgrade drive (CECH-ZHD1) is sold separately. Colours: Charcoal Black (standard), Azurite Blue (previously Japan-only, per Engadget 2013), Garnet Red. CECH-42xx/43xx are later hardware revisions of the same 'Super Slim' generation (per en Wikipedia's CECH-4200 note on the AACS analogue-output rule change from 2014); exact per-code differences not detailed further in the sources checked.
