Announced as the successor to the PlayStation 3 in February 2013, it was launched on November 15, 2013, in North America, November 29, 2013, in Europe, South America, and Australia, and on February 22, 2014, in Japan. A console of the eighth generation, it competed with Microsoft's Xbox One and Nintendo's Wii U and Switch. Moving away from the more complex Cell microarchitecture of its predecessor, the console features an APU from AMD built upon the x86-64 architecture, which can theoretically peak at 1.84 teraflops; AMD stated that it was the "most powerful" APU it had developed to date.

Silent revision announced only as a model-number change (4Gamer, 2017-10-03: 'internal parts changed, no difference in specifications'). Approx. 3.2 kg (down from 3.3 kg); a quieter fan profile at slightly higher load temperatures was measured by the press. The 500 Million Limited Edition (2 TB) carries a CUH-7100B-series Japanese code. PS4 model codes: CUH-<generation><region><capacity letter>. The last two digits before the letter are the market (00 Japan, 01 and later 15 US/Canada, 02 Australia/New Zealand, 03 UK/Ireland, 04 and later 16 Europe, 06 Asia); the letter is the HDD size (A = 500 GB, B = 1 TB, C = 2 TB). Japanese retail boxes add a two-character colour suffix (B01 Jet Black, B02 Glacier White). Sony has never published this scheme as a list: the individual codes come from retail boxes, manuals and psdevwiki page titles, so regional_codes are confidence M even on records…
