It was first released in Japan on December 17, 2011, then in other international territories on February 22, 2012, and was produced until discontinuation on March 1, 2019. The console is the successor to the PlayStation Portable (PSP), and a part of the PlayStation brand of gaming devices; as part of the eighth generation of video game consoles, it primarily competed with the Nintendo 3DS.

Announced 2013-09-09. 20% slimmer and 15% lighter; LCD instead of OLED, micro-USB type B instead of the proprietary port, 1 GB of internal storage, longer battery life (SP86R cell), plastic top edge and the SONY logo moved to the top left of the screen. Wi-Fi only - no 3G version and no wired PS4 link. North American release confirmed on PlayStation.Blog in February 2014 and shipped 2014-05-06 with the Borderlands 2 bundle.
