It was originally a remodeled export version of the Sega Mark III, the third iteration of the SG-1000 series of consoles, released in Japan on October 20, 1985. The Master System was launched in North America in September 1986, followed by Europe in August 1987, South Korea in April 1989, and Brazil in September 1989. A Japanese version was launched on October 23, 1987, with additions including a built-in FM audio chip, a rapid-fire switch, and a dedicated port for the 3D glasses. The Master System II, a cheaper model, was released in 1990 in North America, Australasia, and Europe.

Third SG-1000 generation with new Sega VDP (315-5124, 64-colour palette, hardware scrolling), 8 KB RAM, card slot, cartridge slot, expansion slot and DIN-8 AV port (video cable sold separately); fully compatible with SC/SG software. Box contents (sega.jp): 2 joypads (SJ-152), AC adapter, TV switch box, RF cable, antenna matcher, manual. Size 318x145x52 mm. Hand-opened cartridge slot cover. Release date: sega.jp (new site, 2017) 1985-10-20; old sega.jp site and Sega Consumer History 2002 say October 1985; 1985 trade press announced 1985-10-01 or November (ja.wikipedia note). 'SG-1000M3' is the distribution code; Sega Retro says it does not appear on the unit or box. Also sold in South Korea (HiCom/Korea Oacs, 1988-11, KRW 115,000) and Taiwan (Aaronix) - see variants.
