Codenamed "Project Mars", it was designed to expand the power of the Genesis and serve as a transitional console into the 32-bit era until the release of the Sega Saturn. The 32X uses its own ROM cartridges and has its own library of games. It was distributed under the name Super 32X in Japan and South Korea, Genesis 32X in North America, Mega 32X in Brazil, and Mega Drive 32X in all other regions. Sega unveiled the 32X at the Consumer Electronics Show in June 1994, and presented it as a low-cost option for 32-bit games.

Codename Mars. Two SH-2 at 23 MHz, 2 Mbit RAM + 2 Mbit VRAM, PWM sound, 32,768 colours; plugs into the cartridge slot, own AC adapter (DC 10V), cables for Mega Drive and Mega Drive 2 plus MD2 spacer included (sega.jp). Price cuts: USD 99 (Sept 1995), cleared at USD 19.95 (en.wikipedia). Sega-branded cartridges are wider and cannot fit a plain Mega Drive (sega.jp). Some combo machines (Wondermega, X'Eye) needed a paid modification by the maker to accept the 32X (sega.jp, ja.wikipedia). Unreleased: Sega Neptune (Genesis + 32X, cancelled Oct 1995).
