Originally released in Japan on December 12, 1991, it came to North America on October 15, 1992, and the rest of the world in 1993. The Sega CD plays CD-based games and adds hardware functionality such as a faster CPU and a custom graphics chip for enhanced sprite scaling and rotation. It can also play audio CDs and CD+G discs. Sega sought to match the capabilities of the competing PC Engine CD-ROM² System, and partnered with JVC to design the Sega CD.

Cost-reduced top-loading model sitting beside the Mega Drive; ships with steel joint plate, screws and a spacer for the original Mega Drive (sega.jp). 220 x 396 x 84 mm. Boot screen shows Sonic with flying Mega-CD 2 / Sega logos. Model-code note: the current sega.jp devices page prints 型番 HAA-2500 for the Mega-CD 2, clearly a copy error; the older sega.jp page (fb/segahard/mcd/mcd2.html) gives HAA-2912. Spain and some other markets received only the model 2 (ja.wikipedia).
