It was Sega's third console and the successor to the Master System. Sega released it in October 1988 in Japan as the Mega Drive, and in August 1989 in North America as the Genesis. In 1990, it was distributed as the Mega Drive by Virgin Mastertronic in Europe, Sega Ozisoft in Australasia, and Tectoy in Brazil. In South Korea, it was distributed by Samsung Electronics as the Super Gam*Boy and later the Super Aladdin Boy.

sega.jp: smaller and lighter, power lamp and headphone jack removed, stereo out through the new 9-pin mini-DIN A/V port (separately sold stereo DIN cord), AC adapter DC 10V EIAJ, ~7 W, 220 x 212 x 59 mm; JP box contains the Fighting Pad 6B (SJ-6000), DIN plug cord, AC adapter, manual. No cartridge lock; the Mega Adaptor (Power Base Converter) does not fit the JP model (sega.jp). Western units use a push-button power switch and red power LED; JP/Asian units keep a slide switch and no LED; JP slot has a red flap (ja.wikipedia variations). Sold in North America simply as 'Genesis' (not 'Genesis 2'). Sega of America price USD 79.99 from 1997-06-04 with pack-ins such as 6-Pak or Sonic Spinball (SOA press release). Later boards integrate the CPUs into one ASIC (VA4, 315-5960) (Sega Retro).
