It was first released in Japan on March 4, 2000, in North America on October 26, in Europe on November 24, in Australia on November 30, and other regions thereafter. It is the successor to the original PlayStation as well as the second installment in the PlayStation brand of consoles. As a sixth-generation console, it competed with Nintendo's GameCube, Sega's Dreamcast, and Microsoft's Xbox. Announced in 1999, Sony began developing the console after the immense success of its predecessor. In addition to serving as a game console, it featured a built-in DVD drive, enhancing its value.

Final PS2 hardware revision. AC adapter integrated into the console for the first time since the original SCPH-1x000-5x000 fat models (no separate power brick); ~720g including the adapter (lighter than the SCPH-79000's console+adapter total of ~850g); front-panel styling loses the SCPH-70000-79000's ridged/stepped design. Power draw approx. 35W. Functionally identical to the SCPH-70000-79000 series and uses the same peripherals. Sony stopped manufacturing/repairing Ceramic White and Satin Silver units and accessories from March 2009, leaving Charcoal Black as the only continuing colour until Cinnabar/Sienna Red was added in July 2008 (see variants.json).
