It was originally released on July 15, 1983 as the Family Computer (and widely known as the Famicom) in Japan, with design work led by Masayuki Uemura. Nintendo intentionally redesigned it as the NES in North America in an attempt to avoid the stigma of video game consoles lingering from the video game crash the same year; while it was initially conceptualized as a home computer, it was ultimately modeled after a videocassette recorder (VCR) for its debut there on October 18, 1985.

Shown at Famicom Space World 1993-08-24; planned for October, delayed by the switch from RF to composite. Composite AV via Super Famicom multi-out cables (mono audio), RF only via RF modulator HVC-103; detachable controllers HVC-102 (no microphone). Expansion port moved to the side; no eject lever. AC adapter and RF/AV cables not included. Last unit made 2003-09-25, serial NH11033309 (ja) / HN11033309 (en), kept by Nintendo. Repairs ended June 2012.
