It was released as the Super Famicom (SFC) in Japan on November 21, 1990, as the Super NES in North America on August 23, 1991, and internationally throughout 1992. It was Nintendo's second programmable home console, following the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). A fourth-generation console, the SNES primarily competed with the Sega Genesis in the console war, a fierce battle for market share in the United States and Europe. Masayuki Uemura, a Nintendo engineer, designed the 16-bit SNES in response to the introduction of the Genesis and NEC's TurboGrafx-16.

Box contents at JP launch: console + 2 controllers + manual only; AC adapter (HVC-002), RF switch and AV cables were shared with the Famicom and sold separately (ja.wikipedia, sourced to Game Machine 1990). Launch shipment 300,000 sold out within hours (en.wikipedia). Shipments per ja.wikipedia (Game Machine citations): ~650k by Dec 1990, ~1.49M by Mar 1991, ~3.8M by end 1991, 11.36M JP / 14.16M US by Dec 1993. JP price cut to JPY 9,800 on 1996-08-14 (official Nintendo JP page lists 9,800 JPY tax excl. as the RRP). ja.wikipedia: product codes changed from 'SHVC-xx' to 'SHVC-xxxJ-JPN' style in late 1994 - early 1995; it also calls the later console 'SHVC-001 SHVC-JPN-1' (unsourced). Also sold in Hong Kong and Taiwan by local Nintendo subsidiaries (ja.wikipedia). Repair support ended 2007-10-31.
