It allows Game Boy Advance cartridges, as well as Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges through backwards compatibility, to be played on a television. Rather than emulating a Game Boy Advance system, the Game Boy Player uses physical hardware nearly identical to that of a Game Boy Advance. The peripheral received mainly positive reviews from critics.

Official Nintendo JP page lists four colours matching the GameCube (Violet, Orange, Black, Silver). Box contents: Game Boy Player + start-up disc. Start-up discs are region-locked software, not hardware variants; Nintendo of America sold replacement discs (US$15 + US$5 shipping) from June 2003. A separate Game Boy Player for the Panasonic Q (SH-GB10) exists and is not DOL-017.
