It was released as the Family Computer (Famicom) in Japan on July 15, 1983, and as the NES in test markets in the United States on October 18, 1985, followed by a nationwide launch on September 27, 1986. The NES was distributed in Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia throughout the 1980s. It was Nintendo's first programmable home console, succeeding the Color TV-Game line of dedicated consoles, and primarily competed with Sega's Master System in the third generation of video game consoles.

Official spec (Nintendo JP): DC10V 850mA via AC adapter HVC-002, about 4 W, 150x220x60 mm, about 620 g with controllers; bundled HVC-002 AC adapter, HVC-003 RF switch, HVC-004 75/300 ohm converter. Hardwired controllers I (Start/Select) and II (microphone + volume). Early units recalled for a faulty chip (1983). Mainboard revisions HVC-CPU-05/-06/-07 and HVC-CPU-GPM-02 per famicomworld (no visible difference). Also sold in Hong Kong (HVC-001HKG, via Simon & Toys), Taiwan (1987 per ja.wikipedia) and Thailand as licensed 'Family FR202' (ja.wikipedia). Official repair ended 2007-10-31.
