It was first released in Japan on March 4, 2000, in North America on October 26, in Europe on November 24, in Australia on November 30, and other regions thereafter. It is the successor to the original PlayStation as well as the second installment in the PlayStation brand of consoles. As a sixth-generation console, it competed with Nintendo's GameCube, Sega's Dreamcast, and Microsoft's Xbox. Announced in 1999, Sony began developing the console after the immense success of its predecessor. In addition to serving as a game console, it featured a built-in DVD drive, enhancing its value.

First redesigned "slim"/"slimline" PS2: part count cut from 1,614 to 1,216, volume reduced to about 23% and mass to about 45% of the SCPH-1x000/3x000/5x000 case (approx. 230x28x152mm, ~900g at SCPH-70000-77000, ~600g at SCPH-79000 with a lighter external AC adapter, ~250g vs ~350g). Switched from a disc tray to a top-loading lid (last used on the original PS1/PS one); built-in Ethernet (no HDD support - the Expansion Bay and PlayStation BB Unit-loading were removed); requires an external AC adapter for the first time since the SCPH-1x000 series (PS one was the only other Sony home console of the era without an internal PSU). PS2 logo changed from printed colour to an uncoloured moulded emboss from this series onward. Some PS1/PS2 titles are reported incompatible on SCPH-75000 and later boards.
