As a sixth-generation console, it competed with Nintendo's GameCube, Sega's Dreamcast, and Microsoft's Xbox. Announced in 1999, Sony began developing the console after the immense success of its predecessor. In addition to serving as a game console, it featured a built-in DVD drive, enhancing its value.

Given Sony's PS2 regional SKU numbering (last digit 3 = Asia outside Japan, per the note on ps1-scph-1000/ps1-scph-100-103 in models.json), this is plausibly an SCPH-7700x-series 'Asia' region code, but no source checked gives the exact model suffix, price or precise date, hence confidence L and model_code left null rather than guessed.
